Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s kindergarten through higher education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.
AVID is school-wide at Nimitz Elementary
School Year 2014-2015: Grade Level consistency on the use of the planner; Implementation of organizational binder system and pencil pouches; Use of 2- and 3-column note-taking; Monthly College Shirt Days; Development of college-going culture; Attendance at Summer Institute; Attendance at National Conference; SLANT; AVID Coordinators attend monthly Complex meetings; Site Team meetings held at least quarterly; Participate in Professional Development provided by Complex; Use of AVID Elementary Weekly.
School Year 2015-2016: Continue with initiatives started in SY 2014-2015 on Organization; Each grade level will incorporate three (3) components of WICOR into a lesson; Hold an AVID Family Night; Adopt a college; Monthly college shirt days; Map of Faculty college alma maters on a poster to display for students; AVID Coordinators to observe classrooms across the Radford Complex; Display AVID posters in every room (SLANT, STAR Note-Taking, and Levels of Thinking and Questioning)
*On Tuesday, 9/15/2015, families joined us at our first AVID Family Night. It was a great success with 59 students and 172 family members.
School Year 2016-2017: Focus on Inquiry; Continue with implementation efforts over the last two years; Professional Development by Annette Murray (AVID Program Manager in Hawaii) on Costa's Levels of Thinking and Questioning; Create an assessment tool; Select strategies for teaching the Levels of Thinking and Questioning; Teachers will meet to determine how scaffolding will occur regarding the assessment tool and teaching strategies.
School Year 2016-2017: Focus on Inquiry; Continue with implementation efforts over the last three years; Each Grade Level will adopt an area on campus to make AVID more visible.
